James was born and raised in the midwest, in Joliet, IL. James earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from The University of Iowa, where he attended on full athletic scholarship. While at the University of Iowa James’ basketball career entailed numerous honors, including the Iowa Letterman's Club,  Most Valuable Player, Team Captain, and was a second-team All Big Ten selection.
